Migrate from FamilySearch

Import your FamilySearch family tree into Clangram.

FamilySearch is fantastic for shared genealogical research, but the interface can be heavy for everyday family sharing. Export a branch as a GEDCOM and bring it into Clangram for a cleaner, more private shared tree that the whole family will actually use.

How to export your FamilySearch tree

  1. 1Sign in at familysearch.org and open a person at the root of the branch you want to export.
  2. 2Click the person's name to open their Person page, then choose Tools in the right-hand panel.
  3. 3Under Tools, click Create a GEDCOM. FamilySearch lets you pick how many generations up and down to include — pick a sensible scope (e.g. 4 up, 4 down).
  4. 4Submit the request. FamilySearch emails you when the GEDCOM is ready to download (usually within a few minutes). Save the .ged to your computer.

Heads up

  • FamilySearch's GEDCOM does not include photos or sources — just the people and relationships.
  • If the branch you export is huge, consider splitting into smaller GEDCOMs and creating separate Clangram families for each line.

Bring the tree into Clangram

  1. ASign up for a Clangram account and create a new (empty) family.
  2. BGo to Settings → Import and pick Choose file to import. Select the .ged you exported from FamilySearch.
  3. CClangram parses the file and creates every person and relationship. You'll land on an interactive tree view with birthdays, map, and all.
